About me

I am an artist, photographer & printmaker, with teaching experience that spans primary to adult education. Having graduated from Bradford University with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art, Printmaking and Photography. I completed a PGCE at Bretton Hall and have since spent over 20 years working as an Art and Design teacher including a 5 year position overseas in Bermuda and a year of study in Beijing, China. Since 2008, have led the photography department at Cheadle & Marple Sixth Form College and spend my remaining time working as an independent artist.

My personal artwork embraces many photographic processes and ways of working, in particular, ‘photograms’. A photogram is an image created by placing objects between a light source and photo sensitive material, exposing the object to light and developing the image using wet processes, revealing the shadows cast by the object.  I am intrigued by ways of seeing and by the revelations that occur when looking more deeply into the aesthetics of an object.

I have held several Artist’s Residencies (Leeds, Barcelona, Bermuda) and have exhibited regularly at home and abroad.  Recent highlights include being selected from 400 artists to exhibit in the 5th Biennial Open Exhibition at the Waterside Arts Centre (Sale, April-July 2016) and using my partially-renovated narrowboat as a unique exhibition site on the New Mills Arts Festival “Art Trail” (September 2016). Key commissions include a collection of photograms based on the Thackray Medical Museum exhibits and a recent agreement with the Museum of Manchester to investigate the aesthetics of their natural history collection through the use of photograms.
